Container Shipping Methods

📦 Container Shipping Methods

1. FCL (Full Container Load) - The Blue Container

  • Definition: FCL means a shipment that occupies an entire container.

  • As shown in the image: The blue container is filled exclusively with yellow boxes, representing "Your Shipment" only.

  • Key Features:

    • Sole Use: The shipper (you) has exclusive use of the container.

    • Faster Transit: Generally faster because the container goes directly to its destination without being loaded or unloaded at a consolidation point.

    • Ideal for: Large volume shipments that are enough to fill a significant portion of or the entire container.

    • Cost: Usually more cost-effective per unit of volume than LCL if you have enough goods to maximize the container space.

2. LCL (Less than Container Load) - The Red Container

  • Definition: LCL means a shipment that does not occupy an entire container and is grouped with other compatible shipments.

  • As shown in the image: The red container is filled with various colors of boxes (yellow, green, gray, black), representing "Your Shipment" and "Other Importers Shipments."

  • Key Features:

    • Shared Space: The container space is shared among multiple shippers.

    • Consolidation: Requires extra time for consolidation (loading other shipments) and deconsolidation (unloading at the destination).

    • Ideal for: Smaller volume shipments

    • Cost: More flexible for small shipments, as you only pay for the volume your goods occupy, though the rate per cubic meter (CBM) is often higher than FCL.
